keen supporter of the Countryside Alliance and a director of military

8% drop.

Geraldine
Smith MP
Morecambe & Lunesdale
Labour
In 1997 Geraldine Smith overhauled a notional Conservative majority
of 10,572 to win by a touch under 6,000 votes. She beat Conservative
Mark Lennox-Boyd, previously secretary to Margaret Thatcher, who
had tried to bring a nuclear waste facility to Heysham. She was
named Labour's 2004 Campaigning MP of the Year for her (largely
unsuccessful) attempts to have the cockling industry regulated following
the 2004 cockling tragedy and the devastation of the Morecambe Bay
cockle beds due to over-exploitation.
