Lancashire County Council has resolved to undertake environmental studies of the Heysham - M6 link routes (the Lancaster bypass). If the Western route proves impossible, the County Council may then pursue the Northern route. Or perhaps a subterranean route. Or anything that will mean massive channelling of local resources to the road construction industry and compulsory purchase of expensive little land parcels. (The cabinet resolution in full appears here and you can read about the latest developmenst as of October 2002 here).

If the Western route proves impossible, the County Council may then pursue the Northern (Orange) route. Or perhaps a subterranean route. Or anything that will mean massive channelling of local resources to the road construction industry and compulsory purchase of expensive little land parcels.

Meanwhile, "the County will continue to invest in traffic management measures and additional public transport options as will improve the situation in the interim." Please let us know here at Virtual-Lancaster if you see any signs of this.

Current County Council Cabinet Policy on the Bypass

The County Council cabinet met in December 2002 and agreed the following (green
means western, orange means northern)

"1. The Heysham/M6 Link should remain the county's top priority scheme for
road construction in Lancashire.

2. In view of the environmental issues which need to be addressed in
relation to the green route, the County Council should undertake
environmental impact studies of both the green and the orange routes.

3. If it proves impossible to proceed with the green route, the County
Council should then pursue the orange route.

4. Meanwhile, the County will continue to invest in such traffic
management measures and additional public transport options as will hell to
improve the situation in the interim."
