Autonomous University of Lancaster AUL is an ideal, a banner under which a group of staff and students self-organise educational settings that are not limited by demands of the market. The aim of AUL is to offer free seminars, lectures, workshops and whatever else you can imagine that is too narrow, too political, too hot or too different for the general academic curriculum in mainstream institutions. AUL is a growing network of people from around the world. The AUL holds regular Thursday lectures at the Friends Meeting House, Lancaster (see events listings).

As of 1 August 2007 St Martin's College has been incorporated in the University of Cumbria (see news archive).
UC has more than 15,000 students at campuses and sites in Carlisle Ambleside, Penrith, Lancaster, Whitehaven, Barrow and London. It provides a wide range of degree courses in subjects including business, the arts, teaching, nursing, outdoor studies and sport, to name just a few.
The University was created in August 2007 from an amalgamation of St Martin's College, Cumbria Institute of the Arts and two of the Cumbrian campuses of UCLAN.
The University of Cumbria is funded by The Northwest Regional Development Agency (NWDA) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England.
St Martin’s produces more teachers than anywhere else in the country
and is one of the main providers of health care professionals in the
NW.
The Sunday Times University Guide 2004 reported that St Martin’s
graduates are more likely to get a graduate level job on completing
their course than any other Higher Education Institute in the country.
