Lancaster has its own free "What's Cooking" Directory,
which you can pick up in the Tourist Information Centres. Some
of the information here is sourced from restaurants adverts
in the 2000 edition.
There's plenty to do between meals and after dinner too
- our 'What's On'
guide is absolutely the best available for Lancaster and
the Morecambe Bay Area.
Additions

RESTAURANTS & CAFES IN MORECAMBE
Alfredo's
Skipton Street, Morecambe LA4 4AR Tel: 01524 415184 Jane and Neville Galloway write (October 2005): "We are new to the area and thought we would try this place, as many
locals recommended it to us.
"We visited Alfredo's on a Saturday night at the beginning of August.
"We found the staff very friendly and the place bubbling with atmosphere. The lighting in the restaurant area is subdued and this adds to the over
all ambience.
"We had the lot, starters, main and pudding, we honestly could not fault
the food quality, although reputed to 'do a good steak' we couldn't
order a fillet, but the entrecote we both ordered, was cooked to our
liking and tasted excellent, our overall impression of this place was
very good.
"We thought it to be good value for money.
"The only down side to a very enjoy able evening was the amount of
smokers in the restaurant." • Eaten here? Send

Artisan Cafe / Delicatessen 296, Marine Rd Central, Morecambe LA4 5BY.
Tel: 01524 417954 Dave & Liz Russell (October 2007): We had a delicious light lunch with good service. The menu was interesting and made you want to visit again. The only down side was the small premises.
Rob Arnold (August 2007): The Artisan has excellent food but a big problem with slow but friendly service. Definitely in the top three in Morecambe for consistent quality cafe eating. Innovative and interesting food. Pity that the outside pavement is so windy. Big problem that it is too small for the potential. These proprieters should think bigger and faster and then they would have perfection. Ian Dean (July 2007): Overpriced overated, on a hot day we decided to call in at the artisan two
sandwiches and two drinks coming close to a tenner, with little filling to
sort out my hungry stomach, what a disapointing little cafe. Paula Clasper (December 2006):
Artisan is past the Pier bookshop heading toward Bare and has a really
nice
selection of cakes to get your mouth watering as well as light lunches and a
little deli counter in the back - small intimate and relaxed. Max Johnson (December 2006) writes: Artisan is a world away from the dross of the local Morecambe cafes. The food is all good, and some of it is seriously good. The proprietors are either much better cooks or perhaps they simply care more about the quality of their food; probably both. Prices are very reasonable. There is also an interesting Deli in the back. Service can be slow and it's a pity it's so small, but Morecambe is lucky to have this place! • Eaten here? Send

Cafe and juice / smoothie bar. Paula Clasper (Dec 2006): They actually
have a sign outside saying we are not a PUB! And you can get a lovely selection of juices, smoothies, coffees etc as well
as a good selection of light lunches (which are quite big actually!) and
they can cater for special dietary requirements. I have a friend who needs
gluten free and she was able to choose straight off the menu having first
informed them that she was gluten intolerant. If you phone them up in
advance they will be able to offer other choices too!!! Really lovely.

Crescent Coffee Lounge
Marine Rd, Morecambe. Tel: 01524 410187.
winter opening: Mon-Fri 9am - 4pm
Sat/Sun: 9am-4.30pm
Late Saturday special evening menu: 7pm-12am
Barry Dymock (Feb 2007): Late February this year we were in Morecambe while our motorhome was being
fitted with a Turbo at TB Turbo in Lancaster. Went in to the Crescent Coffee
Room, slightly apprehensively as we don't normally like paying ridiculous
prices for the frothy style coffee some places serve, noticed that they did
all day breakfasts, so ordered two.
When it was brought to the table it was absolutely amazing. There were two
of everything !! Served on the biggest circular plate I have ever seen (and
I'm 68, wife 58 - anywhere, and we get around a bit in the Motorhome) which
consisted of:
2 slices of bacon (excellent quality);
2 sausages;
2 hash browns;
2 slices (thick) of black pudding;
2 mushrooms;
2 eggs;
2 pieces of toast;
tomatoes - wife had baked beans.
I'd unhesitantly highly recommend this establishment as the best I've ever
found anywhere to anyone.

Food for Thought
Poulton Memorial Hall, Church St (near the Town Hall), Morecambe
Open
Tues - Fri 9 - 4. Graham Cunnington (October 2006) writes: The food is really tasty and the cooking is flexible. The curry is quite mild
as standard but I asked for a hot one and so got it that way. The staff are
smashing and if you need a power surge to get you through the day, I
recommend their protein and mineral-packed breakfast.
Kathy Bashford writes (July 2006): Plenty of local and
organic food in Morecambe and all meals
are under £3! It's run by the Healthy Living Centre so
they grow some of the food in the community garden. • Eaten here? Send

3-5 Peddar Street Morecambe LA4 5DY Tel: 01524 410927 Rob Arnold (September 2007): Good food at the Grove but would agree that the service just isn't too consistent which put me off using it in the evening. A sensibly wide menu cross using ingredients and a wealth of experience here, just a little lacking on the floor John Freeman (October 2005): "Finding a good place to eat in Morecambe during the day isn't that easy if you have no reviews to go on, but a friend suggested the Grove and we decided
to give it a try after a disappointing pub lunch at Wetherspoons a few weeks previously. It was worth it: we had traditional English fare and were more than pleased with the quality - generous portions of vegetables, too, something of a rarity it seems these days. There's a good range of food on offer in pleasant surroundings and the puddings - try the lemon meringue if it's on the menu - was excellent.
Service was a little off on the day we went - got a glass of red wine instead of white-- but the host is friendly and the prices are reasonable, on a par with a lunch in one of Lancaster's restaurants." • Eaten here? Send

Full takeaway service available; special vegetarian menu. Jack Mitchell writes (May 2005):
Overlooking the bay it has two floors, disabled access, a discreet children's
play table and is within a minute's walk from the nearest bus stop. On
arrival you're brought a basket of warmed prawn crackers to eat while
perusing their extensive and reasonably priced menu - although the over-attentive
staff expect you to have decided what you are having almost before you've
opened it. Smartly attired and efficient though they were, it was disconcerting
to see them hovering around our table like vultures waiting to swoop.
Despite the unease one may feel at their presence and the sensation of
being fed and watered as rapidly as possible so that they can clear the
table, the food is delicious and served promptly. Smoking is restricted
to two areas - a collection of stools near the bar and a few chairs and
a table hidden away next to the well maintained washrooms. "The Honey
Tree" is a great place with only the chilly temperature and slightly
over attentive staff as its flaws. Food - Four stars; Service - Three
stars; Decor - Five stars; Cleanliness - Five stars; Price - Three stars. Michael Glen writes (Aug 2005): I totally agree with
the posted comments, you no sooner get a drink from your glass and the
staff are asking if you want another !! The food is good, I feel the portions
are small, and the food is never really hot. But, it is spotless !! • Eaten here? Send

Tel: 01524 832633 Max Johnson (December 2006): I moved to Heysham from Bradford several years ago, and so have been spoilt for curries, hitherto. I've only eaten at the Morecambe Tandoori on Saturday nights when, hardly surprisingly, there is the usual Saturday-night curry house atmosphere. You know the sort of thing - crowded, hot, people with bald heads and tattoos shouting at each other, harrassed, busy and efficient waiters. The curry is good - best in Morecambe in my opinion. • Eaten here? Send

Pebbles Restaurant (Crown Hotel)
239 Marine Road Central Morecambe LA4 4BJ
Tel: 01524 831841 Max Johnson (June 2007) : Having submitted a less than 100% favourable review last month, I promised to try the a la carte menu, and had high expectations of this. I'm afraid we were even less impressed. For example, fish cakes had very little flavour. The duck was over-cooked and came with an inedibly sweet sauce. It was a busy Friday, but I wonder if the chef was there? A part of me hopes he wasn't. The a la carte is expensive (see their website), and we won't be trying it again. The coffee was a vast improvement on the first visit, the service was good and the wines are ok. We might return for a less expensive 'early bird' - not sure when though! Timothy John Spence (May 2007): After having read positive previous reviews my wife and I decided to journey to the Pebbles restaurant from Lancaster Town Centre on a fine Thursday evening around 8:30pm. Unfortunately the service we experienced was very slow and of poor standard. The food was mediocre at best, my steak was well-done despite asking for it VERY RARE and the salad dressing was that potent that it simply put us off the rest of our food. The restaurant itself was poorly lit and used a variety of dark, heavy textures and fabrics. The décor suggested more of a dungeon than a supposedly top quality restaurant. Will not be eating there again! Nikki Shepherd (May 2007): Visiting Lancaster for a family weekend away, decided to head to Morecambe on the Friday night, so I sat reading reviews en route - Pebbles stuck me as promising, so I rang at 4.30pm and was told they were full ( well at that late stage it was hope rather than expectation) but had space if we could arrive before 6.30pm. With 2 children this suited us well.
The setting is very pleasant, parking very easy, initial impressions were good. The Early Bird menu had good range and there were half portions for the children or the staple kids 'favourites' if preferred.
From the first taste I was thrilled we'd come, food was beautifully presented, well flavoured and incredibly good value. I would urge you to go there, service is friendly and swift, when you have enjoyed yourselves and considered when you can go again next, wander over the road and enjoy the Eric Morecambe Statue area directly opposite.
I loved it, my husband who is never over enthusiastic about anything was impressed too. Enjoy. Max Johnson (May 2007): I went on a very quiet Tuesday, and selected from the 'Early Bird' menu (£12 for 3 courses, between 6-8pm). Having heard reports of Pebbles being a gourmet heaven I was a little bit disappointed, however, this might have been because my expectations were unreasonably high! The food was good, and was probably the best restaurant meal that I've had in Morecambe. It was certainly excellent value and the service was good. A small selection of very drinkable wines from the winelist was available by the glass, The coffee, although not cheap, was dreadful. It was stewed. I know it was a quiet Tuesday evening, but that is no excuse. That said, I will certainly go again and next time will, in fairness, select from the a la carte menu, which I confidently expect to be a gastronomic revelation. In fact, I'm looking forward to already! Alan & Gillian Barnes (Feb 2007): What a lovely place to stay, rooms are VERY tastefully decorated and well equipped.
The restaurant is as good as any you will find in our major cities, freshly cooked and presented in a style even Gordon Ramsey would be proud of.

The Battery
Heysham Rd, Heysham, Morecambe LA3 1DG
Tel: 01524 426235 Berwick writes (26/6/06): This pub was once a fantastic
place to eat, but what has happened? The food is terrible, the tables
are dirty, the carpets haven't been hoovered and the furniture, is
badly stained and broken. Even the ceiling was leaking.
The food was badly presented, uncooked and swimming in sloppy mush,
and was totally unedible. We spent £35 on our food which did
not include our drinks, which was also served from a high street purchased
bottle of Pepsi and was flat.
The staff were nice but the quality of management that are now running
the place must be of a very low standard, which is a shame as this is reflection
on their staff, for the conditions they are working under.
We were very disappointed and will not be recommending this place to
eat. • Eaten here? Send

"The interior of the venue is outstanding, and this has to be the
