LAWM presentsDavid
Thomas Broughton. 8pm. The Yorkshire House, Lancaster.
£5. Using simple tools- an acoustic guitar, some looping pedals,
a cheap drum machine - Broughton has created a singular statement
of purpose and artistic intent. Long after “freak-folk”
is no longer a trend, listeners will still be pulling his album
‘The Complete Guide to Insufficiency’ off the shelf.
Comparable to such forebears as John Fahey and Nick Drake, as well
as contemporaries Antony and the Johnsons and Neutral Milk Hotel,
but even these comparisons don’t fully convey the scope and
beauty of Broughton’s sound. "Layer upon layer of musical
quality" (The Guardian). With support from Suzy
Mangion (Manchester), Dean
McPhee (Lancaster) and Jo
Gillot (Lancaster). Tickets

LAWM
presents Thee,
Stranded Horse + Laura
Gibson + Stuart
Anthony + Harvey
Lord.
Thee, Stranded Horse aka Yann Encre weaves together the modes
of French chanson, African polyrhythms, Delta blues, pastoral
psychedelia and traditional folk song shapes. You will not have
heard anything like this before. "dark songs demanding, and
getting, hushed respect" The Guardian. With themes related
to the pacific northwest, Laura Gibson writes songs on a nylon-stringed
guitar. She writes perfect rustic indie folk. She has just been
touring the States with Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, and The
New York Times said of her recent album: "..a short, quiet,
tantalizing debut". Support comes from two very talented
male guitarists, Stuart Anthony who recently headlined the London
Tim Buckley tribute, and Harvey Lord.

The Winter’s Tale – Open Air Theatre at Williamson
Park. Adult Tickets £15.00, Concessions £12.00.
Williamson Park box office 01524 33318. The world renowned Shakespeare’s
Globe are returning to Lancaster this summer, following their hit
outdoor performances of Romeo & Juliet last year with The Winter’s
Tale to be performed in the beautiful grounds of Williamson Park.
Part family drama, part fairytale, The Winter’s Tale brings
Globe Touring’s unique style of open-air performance to Williamson
Park, breathing life into Shakespeare’s magical story of jealousy,
love and redemption. In Shakespeare’s time actors often toured
plays to country houses, inns and town halls all over the UK. This
summer, the Globe’s actors will be emulating the experience
of Elizabethan players, taking all the equipment they need and adapting
the play to a wealth of glorious venues. Suitable for people of
all ages, the arrival of the players will recreate the excitement

'Son of Rambow' (certificate 12A).
7.30pm in Arnside Educational Institute, Church Hill, Arnside. Tickets
£4 on sale at The Little Shop from 21st April. After not quite
scaling the Hollywood heights with The Hitchhiker's Guide To The
Galaxy, the UK's Hammer And Tongs music-promo-making partnership
of director Garth Jennings and Nick Goldsmith went back to their
lo-fi roots for the follow-up. And thank God they did. Made for
less than Hitchhiker's ad budget, this great, hand-crafted little
wonder is not only a rare fun-for-all-ages crowd-pleaser - it's
also a kids' movie for adults that works on both levels without
any compromise. Set in a sleepy '80s seaside town, where Rambo:
First Blood has just opened, it finds two young loners becoming
the best of friends while trying to film their own Stallone-inspired
action caper for TV's Screen Test. Sweet, and truly heartwarming
