John Carney. Cast: Glen Hansard, Markéta Irglová,
Hugh Walsh EI /2006 / 85mins Winner of the Audience Award at this
year’s Sundance Film Festival, John Carney’s poignant,
modern-day love story set on the streets of Dublin offers a brooding
alternative to the traditional conventions of the musical. The film

dream. Attracted by their mutual adoration for music, a hesitant
but empathetic relationship swiftly develops as they come to terms
with past loves through the delicately veiled metaphors of lyrics
that are subtly woven into the narrative. None Visit/call the Box

Denny Laine, former member of Wings and the Moody Blues.
8.00pm. £18. The Platform. Box Office 01524 582803.The concert
will include not only a selection of the songs that he has written
over the years, but also stories and anecdotes of the life of a
British music legend. For a few months back in the 60s, Denny Laine
was one of the most recognisable voices on the entire UK music scene.
As the lead singer of the Moody Blues, he stood out in a large pack.
His soulful, agonized lead vocal performance, coupled with Mike
Pinder’s chiming piano, proved irresistible on the radio.
Within a year, however, the band fell by the wayside. Laine left
the band in 1965 and was replaced by Justin Hayward and Moody Blues
then adopted the increasingly adventurous sound that ended up making
them the premiere progressive rock band of the late 60s.

Melanie. 8pm. The Dome, Morecambe. £16 from the Box Office on 01524
582803. Born in 1947 in New York, Melanie made her first public
appearance at the age of four on a radio show and later studied
at the New York Academy of Fine Arts. After starting her singing
career at college, she later sang in clubs in Greenwich Village
and was signed to a record contract in 1967. She recorded her first
single ‘Beautiful People’ that same year. In 1969, Melanie
took the stage at the Woodstock Festival and her song ‘Birthday
of the Sun’ was released on the Woodstock 2 album. Twenty
years later, the same song was released on video as part of Woodstock:
The Lost Performances, alongside the work of Crosby, Stills and
Nash, The Who and Janis Joplin. A number of albums and singles followed
until the early 80s. At the end of the 80s, she re-emerged once
again with her theme music for the popular television series ‘Beauty
and the Beast’. By that time, Woodstock nostalgia was beginning
to be stoked by the media and concert promoters, and Melanie appeared
at one of the 20th anniversary events. She continued to perform
at clubs in the United States and larger festivals in Europe, where
her association with the sixties made her a major draw, and every
so often she has released albums of new songs or re-recordings of
her classic numbers.

task. Happily the well-respected ceilidh band Moorgate has agreed
to help out by playing at a special fund-raising ceilidh in the
village on Saturday May 10th. Moorgate comprises Richard Robinson
(clarinet), Simon Booth (melodeon and harmonica) and Tony Cooke
(guitar) who are all well-known to folk followers and players
in the District. They have a wealth of experience in playing traditional
music around the North of England with various bands (such as
Free Reed Band, Ran Tan Band, One Foot in the Gutter, Shake A
Leg) and together as Moorgate they claim to be “the complete
ceilidh band”
